ONLINE PIANO LESSON SET UP

HOW TO SET UP FOR ONLINE PIANO LESSONS?

MY ONLINE PIANO LESSON SET UP

During my online and asynchronous piano lessons, I use one HD camera to show a side view of the keys and a 4K camera to show the keyboard from above. In addition, I also have a third 4K camera to demonstrate pedalling when needed.

Using an app called forScore and screen sharing technology, I am able to edit the score in real-time and share it directly to your screen. This allows you to copy in any fingerings or other musical directions needed to enhance your playing.

AN ACOUSTIC OR DIGITAL PIANO?

Before starting your online piano lessons, it is crucial to choose the right instrument. Consider whether an acoustic or digital piano is more suitable for your needs.

Acoustic pianos produce a rich and authentic sound but may require more maintenance and space. On the other hand, digital pianos offer convenience and versatility and tend to be more affordable.

If you choose to purchase a digital piano, I recommend it has 88 full-sized weighted keys, excellent sound quality, and the touch closely resembles that of an acoustic piano.

STUDENT SET UP FOR ONLINE PIANO LESSONS

Although I have quite an advanced set-up, I don’t expect all students to have the same.

In the picture, you will see a typical student set up with the camera at the side of the keyboard so the fingers and keys are visible. It’s not necessary to be able to see all of the keys in detail but to have the best online piano lessons, I recommend choosing a set-up similar to the one in the picture.

To ensure you aren’t distracted while having your piano lessons, find a quiet space where you won’t be disturbed. There should also be adequate lighting and, if possible, an external microphone (although this is not essential).
